APG Supported Metropolitan Village Welcomes First Tenants

We gratefully celebrate APG Capital’s Jim Anthony and John Zemet, the development partners to Charlotte based Liberty Atlantic, on the inspirational story of Metropolitan Village, a signature workforce housing community underway in Winston-Salem.

Metropolitan Village, in the heart Winston Salem just east of US-52, is designed to address affordable housing, health equity, and job and food security. The redevelopment project, an estimated $65 million investment, will feature over 257,000 square feet on 8.2 acres and represents a collaboration between United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, Liberty Atlantic, and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.

The concept for Metropolitan Village began in 2016 when United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church began exploring opportunities to transform their neighborhood into a thriving community.

Situated at the intersection of 4th Street and Highland, the project is just blocks from both Wake Forest School of Medicine and the Innovation Quarter, and a short 10-minute commute to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Phase 1 of Metropolitan Village was completed in December 2023, welcoming tenants into the first 24 units. Phase 2 with an additional 36 units is set to be available in March 2024. Phase 3 with 138 units will be completed during the Summer of 2024. The project broke ground in September 2022.

Metropolitan Village offers a seamless blend of comfort, convenience, and amenities tailored to the lifestyle demands of essential workers and eager learners such as nurse assistants, police officers, EMTs, teachers, and more. All of the housing units were designed for essential low to moderate income workers, and the project offers below market rent without government subsidies. Rents are determined by household income levels rather than being strictly based on income.

Metropolitan Village will also include retail and other tenants, in addition to the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity. Self-care salon suites, financial wellness workshops and classes, educational and skill-building workshops, as well as job placement and recruitment are planned as part of the facilities. Healthcare facilities, childcare services, and transportation links are set to optimize the living experience where everything needed, and more, is just around the corner.

Metropolitan Village is financially backed by APG Ventures led by Jim Anthony and John Zemet, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, and Pinnacle Bank in addition to Liberty Atlantic.
