APG Capital and development partner Raleigh Raised Development are proud to announce the groundbreaking of The Holt at Oberlin, a nine-townhome project at 713 Oberlin Road, just one block from Raleigh’s Village District. With construction now underway and occupancy anticipated in late 2026, The Holt will feature spacious floorplans, two-car garages, and elevator options - bringing a rare opportunity for luxury townhome living in Raleigh within one of the city’s most walkable and historic neighborhoods.
The Holt is more than a development. Its name honors Joseph Holt, Sr., and his wife Elwyna, whose courage in pursuing school desegregation for their son in the 1950s helped shape Raleigh’s civil rights legacy. Located in Oberlin Village - a freedmen’s community founded after the Civil War - The Holt is built with respect for history and responsibility to the community’s future.
For APG Capital Founder and CEO Jim Anthony, this groundbreaking has been decades in the making. In 1995, he acquired three neighboring parcels on Oberlin Road: 616, 702, and 713. Over the years, each property carried its own chapter in the story. 702 Oberlin became the longtime headquarters of Anthony & Co., serving as the company’s home for 25 years until its move to Edwards Mill Road in 2019. 616 Oberlin was developed into a multifamily community and sold to an Atlanta-based builder in 2015, paving the way for the 207-unit “616 at the Village” apartments, which opened in 2017. Meanwhile, 713 Oberlin remained a surface parking lot.
Transforming 713 Oberlin into The Holt required persistence and vision. Rezoning took more than five years, requiring Raleigh Planning Commission review, City Council approval, and design guidance from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission. With approvals secured, the groundbreaking marked not only the start of construction but the culmination of years of dedication.
Yesterday’s standing-room-only event drew over 100 attendees, including Joseph H. Holt, Jr. and his family, neighbors, community leaders, city officials, and the development partners. Stories of history, courage, and triumph were shared, and Joseph Holt and his family were honored with a tribute that now weaves their legacy into the future of Oberlin Village. As Jim Anthony reflected: “There is a theme that has been woven into the fabric of Oberlin Village over the last 100 years or so. It is where giants grow.”
